Lagos State, the country’s economic hub, has been credited with having the highest number of prison inmates.
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its latest data said, 7,396 inmates, out of a total Nigeria’s prison population of 68, 068, are in Lagos prisons.
Trailing Lagos State are Rivers State with 4,424 inmates in prisons in the state, while Kano State prisons have 4,183 inmates.
Bayelsa State has the lowest number of 444 prison inmates, followed by Ekiti with 585 inmates in its prisons.
The data from the bureau also revealed that, the population of Nigeria’s Prisons rose from 65, 030 in 2015, to 68, 686 last year.
