Immigration plans biometric data centre in each LG area

Nigeria Immigration Service is to establish a biometric data centre in each of the country’s 774 local government areas to check the influx of illegal migrants, and to identify which of them has criminal record.

Immigration Comptroller General, Mohammed Babandede, who announced this in Lagos at the end of a two-day tour, explained that the biometric data base will help security agencies to tackle the influx of herdsmen into the country.

He said that the Immigration Service has forwarded a regulation to the Federal Ministry of Justice to cope with the challenges of migrants influx.

“We have not been able to know Nigeriens in our area. Nigerians should know where they are staying. On our own part, we have gone far. We have already sent a regulation to the Ministry of Justice.  The minister of interior has done the regulation, which will take care of foreigners who are called migrants,” he said.

The Comptroller General expects the regulation to be released next week.
