Illegal miners in Ogun State now risks a jail term of five years or a N20 million fine.

The same sanctions awaits others violating the Ogun State Government Mining Regulation.

Commerce and industry commissioner Bimbo Ashiru, made this known in Abeokuta, at the biennial Sand Mining Stakeholders Forum organised by West African pipeline Company Limited.

Ashiru warned that the state government will apply the full weight of law, to rid the state of the illegal miners and those failing to obey its laws on mining.

The commissioner said the activities of the illegal miners are posing danger to people and degrading the environment in the state.

He urged the federal government to conduct necessary inspections and checks before issuing mining licenses to some of the miners operating in the state.

Minister of mines and steel development, Doctor Kayode Fayemi, represented by the Director of Mines Inspectorate, Karnap Wuyep, asked miners to regularize their operations and ensure they work within the confines of the regulations guiding the sector.
