House of Reps legalizes June 12 as democracy day

House of Representatives has approved June 12 of every year as the democracy day to honour Bashorun Mko Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 polls annulled by the Babangida military regime.

The approval, follows the abrogation of May 29 as the democracy day.

The new democracy day was announced by the lawmakers after approving the report on a bill which amended the public holiday act.

President Muhammadu Buhari initiated the move last year when he declared June 12 as Nigeria’s new democracy day, and a day when power will be handed over to new presidents and governors.
