Gunmen have opened fire on worshippers returning from a church after attending a cross over night service in Rivers State.
More than 20 of the worshippers died in the attack in the Ogba/Egbema and Ndoni local government area of the state.
Director General of Nigeria Maritime Administrative and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside, who is an indigene of the area, in a statement, said over 21 killed people died in the attack.
He blamed the attack on the supremacy battle between the rival cultist groups in the axis, and accuses the state government of lacking the capability to secure the state.
Peterside said over 1,000 persons have been killed in the last two years in the mindless killings in the state.
The rampaging gunmen were suspected to be militants working for a man the military described as “a notorious kidnapper, militant, cultist, ardent illegal oil bunkerer”, Mr. Igwedibia Johnson, aka Don Waney, who is on the run, following the raid of his camp and shrines on November 20, last year, as part of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt’s continued efforts to rid the Niger Delta of criminals.
