Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has called for the declaration of the state of emergency on the abuse of drug and substance, mostly by youths.
The Governor warned that drug abuse by youths is reaching an alarming stage at all levels of the society.
Ahmed spoke on the drug menace, while receiving the National President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, at the Government House in Ilorin.
The Governor said “the rate at which our youths imbibed this habit of drug abuse is getting out of hand; our youths in basic education level, secondary level and tertiary level are all into it. It is a very serious situation.
“All hands must be on deck to see to the end of this menace.”
The Governor said the drug abuse is largely contributing to the rising cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and insurgency nationwide.
Government at all levels, according to him, need to adopt measures to curb the menace of drug abuse which is spreading like a cancer, or it will become malignant.
