Germany is to install a solar power project at the University of Calabar.
Consul General of the Embassy of Germany, Herr Ingi Herbert, made this known during the ground-breaking ceremony of the project which is a Nigeria-German energy partnership.
He said $30 million has been voted for the power project, which will be handled by Dantata Solar Ltd, a project development partner, and the University.
The Diplomat explained that the 10 megawatt project, when completed will provide 24 hours power supply throughout the university campus, and the adjoining University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
The project, according to the Consul General will also provide some technical training to personnel of the electrical department.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Zana Akpagu, expressed happiness at the partnership with the German Embassy, saying it was one of the many partnerships with foreign firms and governments.
“Before now we used to spend over N50 million every month to generate power for the university, and this consumes more than our internally generated revenue. Our electrical and technical personnel will acquire additional knowledge from the project which will definitely boost our electricity needs,” the VC said.
