The federal government is to build a zonal prison at a cost of N13 billion in Bauchi, for the states in the North East region, as part of measures to decongest the existing prisons in the country.
A similar 3,000 capacity prison is to be built in each of the five other geo-political zones.
Special Adviser to Interior Minister, Aliyu Gebi, explained that the proposed Bauchi mega prison project will be located on a 25 hectare of land in the Bauchi State capital.
The Bauchi State government, according to him, has agreed to foot the compensation bill of owners of land acquired for the prison project.
“I congratulate the people of Bauchi State as a whole. While working in the Ministry of Interior as an adviser to the Minister, I saw an opportunity. We are building six zonal prisons, 3, 000 capacity,” Gebi explained.
“For example, the one for the North West is in Kano; so I approached the honourable Minister, and after clearing with the governor of my state, fortunately the Minister agreed to situate that of the northeast in Bauchi,” he said.
