FG alerts farmers of Quela birds and locust from Niger

Farmers in most of the northern states have been alerted of the imminent invasion of their farmland by locusts and Quela bird from Niger Republic.

The states alerted of the birds’ invasion include Sokoto, Jigawa, Admawa, Kebbi, Zamfara, Plateau, Kano, Katsina, Yobe, Bauchi, Taraba, Borno and Benue.

Already, locust and other pests had invaded some farms in Jigawa and Zamfara states

Agriculture Minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who issued the alert at an emergency meeting with agriculture commissioners from the states likely to be affected in Abuja, expressed concern that Quela birds invasion could worsen the food crisis in the country.

Agriculture commissioners from some of the southern states, including those from Anambra and delta, also attended the meeting,

Most of the commissioners who attended the meeting urged the presidency to despatch a team to Niger Republic to attack the birds and pests before they moved into Nigeria.
