Ex NBA Chairman asks Police to enforce law to reduce crimes

Former chairman of Abeokuta branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Patrick Iwu, has asked the Ogun State House of Assembly to initiate a resolution aimed at compelling the police and other security agencies to enforce the existing laws to address increasing crime rate in the state.

Speaking with Rockcity FM in Abeokuta, Iwu said the recently anti-armed robbery, kidnapping and land grabbing bill passed by the state house of assembly would not have serious effect on reducing criminal activities in the state.

The harmonized bill has among other provisions, death by hanging for armed robbers, life jail term for kidnappers and 25years imprisonment for land grabbers who use dangerous weapons to forcefully take over landed property in the state.

The former NBA chairman said instead of passing a new law, cautious effort should be made by the assembly and state government to address major problems facing administration of criminal justice system, including slow pace of investigation of suspects by the police.
