Ethiopia advocates permanent UN Security Council seats for Africa

Ethiopia says it will push for Africa to have permanent seats with veto powers at the UN Security Council, following its election to serve in the council from 2017.

Foreign Minister, Tedros Adhanom, says the council as currently constituted does not adequately address the concerns of Africa.

Africa currently has only three non-permanent positions on the Security Council.

Earlier this week, four African Presidents, including Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, called for the implementation of a 2005 Continental Agreement that called for two permanent seats for Africa on the UN Security Council.
