Enugu tightens security at borders to check influx of criminals

Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Enugu State Governor

Enugu State government says it is beefing up security at all approaching points into the state and border communities.

Information commissioner, Ogbuagu Anikwe, who made this known while addressing newsmen at the end of the meeting of the State Executive Council, said the decision aims at checking the infiltration of the state by criminal elements.

He explained that intelligence reports reveal that Enugu is gradually becoming a safe haven for criminals to relocate to enjoy their loot after committing crimes in neighbouring states, due to its secured environment.

The commissioner recalled the relocation of a top kidnapper to the state after masterminding the massacre of more than 20 worshippers after the New Year service at Omoku in Rivers State.

“We got security report that because Enugu is a safe and secure environment, a number of undesirable elements will commit crimes in nearby states and come to enjoy their loots here.

“We are taking this thing seriously because of what happened in River State on New Year day where several people lost their lives.

“One of the ring leaders of that violence was actually traced to Enugu State,” he said.
