Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has said that his administration is finding it difficult to pay the huge pensions and gratuities of the state’s retired civil servants.
The governor who made this known in an interview, stated that Enugu state has the highest pension burden in the South East region because of being the headquarters of the old Eastern region.
The state government according to Ugwuanyi, has no fund to clear its pension obligations.
Apart from the pension burden, the governor said that most of the local governments in the state have no fund to pay salaries, while roads in more than 47 communities are in deplorable condition.
He said, “There are several communities in the state that have not seen earth moving equipment for road construction in the past 40 years.
“Most local government areas are finding it difficult to pay salaries not to talk of construction of roads, but in all of these challenges, we are grateful to God.”
