Emir Sanusi says government’s sponsorship of pilgrims is criminal

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, has criticized all the governments sponsoring people to hajj and other pilgrimages.

Sanusi said it is criminal for state governments to sponsor anybody to pilgrimage with public fund, adding that any state governor doing so is stealing fund from the public coffers.

The traditional ruler spoke on the issue in Kaduna, at the closing session of the northern Nigeria traditional leader’s conference on the out-of-school children.

The emir explained that sponsoring people on pilgrimage is not an act of piety, citing imam Malik who forbids it.

He asked governors in the north to priotize spending on education, health and development, adding a state in the North West region enrolled only 184 candidates in the national ordinary level examination and only 24 passed.
