Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State wants government to check the excesses of the social media.
Social media, according to the chairman of the South East Governors Forum is destroying Nigeria with false news.
Umahi spoke on the issue while addressing the State House correspondents after the meeting of the National Economic Council in Abuja, while answering question on why he said that Ebonyi state is opposed to the proposed Biafra Republic and restructuring of Nigeria.
The governor who claimed he was misquoted, said if he were Nigeria’s President, he will clamp down on the social media.
Umahi who acknowledged that Nigerians are afraid of a bill which once seeks to control the social media believes that social media editors must be compelled to account for whatever they write.
He said, “First, I was falsely reported. What we said was that we stand for unity of our great country Nigeria. We stand for restructuring, a country where there is fairness, there is equity, there is love.
“If I were the president of this country, I will do something about the social media. I think it’s destroying our country.
“We have to agree to that and we are afraid of a bill being passed. I think everyone needs to account for whatever he or she writes.
“So, we stand for restructuring. We stand for a more united Nigeria where everyone we respect one another.”
