Speaker of the House of representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has asked Nigerians to understand the roles of the legislature as an arm of government in a democracy.
Dogara speaking in Kabba while inaugurating constituency projects of a member of the House of Representatives, explained that lawmakers have come under severe pressure and challenges from members of their constituents.
The constituents, according to Dogara, have been pressurising the lawmakers with requests and demands far beyond their roles and capability.
Dogara said the role of lawmakers in a democracy is purely making of laws, oversight of the executive arms of government, and representation.
Dogara said, “This glaring misunderstanding have in many ways put the Legislature under tremendous pressure and challenge. Constituents inundate legislators with request and demand of various issues that are clearly outside the functions of the Parliament.”
“Despite the misinterpretation of the roles of legislature by Nigerians and realising the preponderance of economic and infrastructural deficit across the country, the 8th Assembly of the National Assembly resolved to intervene where and when necessary,” he assured.
