Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has faulted claims that state governors opposed the proposed direct primaries in the electoral act (amendment) 2021, because it will make it difficult for them to manipulate the electoral process.
The governor, however, urges President Buhari to reject the clause, while assenting to the new act, and allow political parties to adopt the mode for the conduct of their primaries.
Ortom, addressing a news conference in Abuja, said direct primaries is easier for the governors to manipulate than indirect primaries.
APC state governors and the PDP have strongly opposed the clause in the electoral act 2021 just passed by the National Assembly, which mandated political parties to adopt direct primaries to pick candidates for elective offices.
But Governor Ortom at the news conference, explained that unlike indirect primaries which could be monitored by all closely, the direct primaries requires a huge resources to monitor.
The governor said direct primaries will empower the governors to actualize their agenda in the electoral process.
