Speaker of the Delta state House of Assembly, Monday Igbuya, has been impeached.
The Speaker was impeached along with the House majority leader, Tim Owhofere by 22 members out of the 29 members of the Assembly.
Immediately, the lawmakers elected Sheriff Oborev-Whori as the new speaker.
The impeached Speaker and the Majority Leader were absent from the sitting of the House presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Friday Osanebi after 7 am.
The new Speaker and members of the House later visited the government house in Asaba to brief Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on the change of leadership.
Political watchers say the impeachment of Hon. Monday Igbuya may not be unconnected with the threat he allegedly handed down to opposition lawmakers in the House to join the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP or forfeit the constituency project funds in their possession.
Others say his impeachment may have been because he vowed not to support Chief Ighoyota Amori’s ambition as chairman of the PDP in Delta State.
