Customs raid Lagos market for smuggled rice
Some of the dealers in rice in Lagos, are now hoarding the commodity, following raid carried out by officers of Nigeria Customs Service in markets, in search of rice suspected to have been smuggled into the country through Seme border.
The customs had banned imported rice through the land borders, insisting on its importation only through the sea ports.
During the customs’ raid, large quantity of suspected smuggled rice was seized from Lagos markets.
The agency Spokesman, Wale Adeniyi, said the customs is empowered by law to seize any suspected smuggled goods within the country.
Customs have been battling with massive smuggling of rice across the Lagos and Ogun state borders from Benin republic, which has been affecting its 2016 revenue projection.
