Court says EFCC has powers to probe state governments’ finances

EFCC Custody

A Federal High Court in Abuja, has ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has powers to investigate the finances of both the state and local governments nationwide.

The Anti-Graft Agency, according to the court, also has the powers to investigate officials of the state governments, except the state governors and deputy governors, who have constitutional immunity.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, made the clarification, while dismissing a suit filed by the Benue State Government challenging the powers of EFCC to investigate and freeze its accounts, in banks.

The judge also ruled that the allegation, that EFCC embarked on the investigation because Governor Samuel Ortom, defected from APC to PDP, is more of a moral, than a legal issue.
