Court orders suspension of allocation to Oyo LGs

Oyo state

*Also stops proposed council polls

A Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the withholding of the payment of the monthly allocation from the federation account to 33 local governments in Oyo state.

The court ordered the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and Accountant General of the Federation to pay the councils allocation into an interest yielding account.

Justice John Tsoho also ordered the stoppage of the state’s local government polls scheduled to hold on February 11.

The judge gave the order while granting application for an injuction filed by heads of 15 villages in the Oyo federal constituency.

The state justice commissioner, Seun Abimbola, addressing newsmen in Ibadan, announced indefinite suspension of the council polls in compliance with the court order.

The litigation followed the state government’s creation of 35 local council development areas from the state’s 33 local government areas.
