The construction of a medical university floated by the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, has begun in the Ogun State capital.
The proposed university of medicine is located at Adebayo village along Ajebo Road, near the city.
Governor Ibikunle Amosun and health minister of state, Doctor Osagie Ehanire, performed the turning of the sod of the project.
Amosun assured of his administration’s continuous support for the project, while urging the host community to support the project, which according to him, will enhance the socio-economic development of the area.
The minister thanks Governor Amosun for releasing 170 hectares of land valued at N2.6 billion for the project, and other interventions, urging him not to relent in support for the project.
The medical director of the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu, hopes the proposed university will take off with students admitted to read medicine by Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
He also explained that the Federal Medical Centre will serve as the university’s teaching hospital.
The medical director said the university will accommodate the expansion of the hospital’s infrastructure such as ultra-modern laboratories of micro-biology, chemical pathology, hematology and pathology department, among others.
