Commonwealth Games 2018: Table Tennis gives Nigeria first medal

Team table tennis has won Nigeria their first medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

The trio of Olajide Omotayo, Bode Abiodun and Segun Toriola earned silver for Nigeria after they lost in the finals 0-3 to India’s Sharath Achanta, Sathiyan Gnana-Sekaran and Harmeet Desai.

The team had defeated England 3-2 in the semi-finals as the Europeans won the bronze beating Singapore 3-0.

Meanwhile, in the shot put event, Chukwu-Ebuka Enekwechi set a new personal record after throwing a distance of 21.14 metres to clinch second place and win another silver for Nigeria.

Tim Nedow from Canada came third with a distance from 20.19 metres, while, Nigeria’s Eke Kalu finished 12th in the finals with a throw of 17.86 metres.

But, Nigeria could not make a mark in the men’s 100 metre sprint as athlete Seye Ogunlewe finished fourth in the final.

Ogunlewe recorded a personal season’s best time of 10.19 seconds to finish behind Jamaican athlete, Yohan Blake; while the other Nigerian, Enoch Adegoke, finished seventh with a time of 10.35 seconds.
