President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated the N50 billion Sunti Golden Sugar Estate in the Mokwa local government area of Niger State.
Buhari says sugar plant which has created 10,000 new jobs is the largest agro-allied investment in Nigeria.
The sugar factory will produce 100,000 metric tonnes of sugar annually, employ a network of 3,000 small scale outgrowers of sugarcane.
Buhari said the socio-economic impact of the company’s investment cannot be quantified as lives would be changed and the impact on the national economy will be significant, stating that the benefits of the River Niger have been overlooked for long.
The chairman of Flour Mills of Nigeria, Mr. John Coumantaros explained that the Sunti Sugar Plant will save Nigeria 100 million dollars on foreign exchange every year and strengthen the capacity and economic status of the people.
The Sunti Golden Sugar Estate occupied 17,000 hectares of land in Mokwa Local government area of Niger State out of which 10,000 hectares is being used as sugarcane farm.Please subscribe to our newsletter
