President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to begin immediate search for crude oil in the Benue trough in the North Central region.
NNPC Group Managing Director, Maikanti Baru, made this known while receiving a delegation of Benue state government in his office in Abuja.
He said the decision aims at guarantying energy security for the country.
The Benue trough which extends 1,000 kilometre Nort East from the Bight of Benin to the Lake Chad Basin, had been explored for crude oil by major oil companies in the past, but failed to yield positive results.
Buhari had also directed NNPC to expedite exploration for crude oil in the Lake Chad Basin in the North East region.
