Buhari declares state of emergency on water supply, sanitation

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared a state of emergency in the water supply, sanitation and hygiene sector.

He said the emergency will reduce the high prevalence of water borne diseases in the country.

Buhari announced the emergency while inaugurating the national action plan for revitalization of water supply and sanitation at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He expresses concern over the recent ranking of Nigeria as second worldwide on open defecation.

The president urged the state governments to complement the efforts of the federal government by giving priority to the sector to enable Nigeria achieve the targets of the sustainable development goals.
