Buhari backs autonomy for councils

President Mohammed Buhari has declared support for the amendment of the 1999 constitution to give full autonomy to the local governments.

Buhari asks local government chairmen to hold consultations with the people in their communities, and lawyers to draft a bill and present it to the National Assembly for consideration.

The President who stated this while receiving members of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, explained that the constitutional amendment he is proposing, would define what should be the relationship between the state governments and local governments.

He said the frosty relationship between the two tiers of government is a very serious constitutional issue, because the state governments feel they own the local governments.
