Bill Seeking Death Penalty For Hate Speeches Resurfaces In The Senate

A bill seeking death penalty for hate speeches has resurfaced at the senate.

The bill seeking the establishment of the commission for the prohibition of hate speech, was sponsored by the senate deputy whip, Aliyu Abdullahi.

The Senator sponsored a similar bill during the eighth national assembly in March 2018, which was rejected by Senators.

His 2018 bill stipulates a death penalty by hanging for anyone found guilty of spreading hate speech, resulting into the death of another person.

The fresh bill was read during the Tuesday plenary of the senate.

Last week, another bill on the abuse of social media was also tabled before the senate.

The social media abuse bill stipulates a three year jail term or n150,000 fine, or both for those convicted
