A faction of the Benue State House of Assembly members said it has initiated the process to impeach Governor Samuel Ortom.
Eight members of the faction were led by the house’s speaker earlier impeached by the pro-governor lawmakers.
They initiated the impeachment process, during a plenary at the assembly complex in Makurdi.
They accused the governor who formally defected from APC last week, of diverting N33 billion of the state fund, and abuse of power.
The Impeached Speaker, Tembir Ikyanga, addressing a news conference after the plenary session, said letters of the proposed impeachment had been transmitted to Governor Ortom and the State Chief Judge.
Earlier, police had dispersed some youths who gathered outside the assembly complex, to prevent the eight lawmakers from holding the plenary, with tear gas canister.
Meanwhile, the remaining 23 lawmakers loyal to the Governor, led by the new speaker, met separately at the government house.
Both factions claimed to be in possession of the house mace.
