Agbakoba supports stripping EFCC of powers to prosecute

Former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba, has joined the call for the stripping EFCC of powers to prosecute corruption cases it investigates.

The new NBA President, Mahmoud Abubakar was the first to demand that EFCC should be restricted to investigating corruption cases, while an independent body handles their prosecution.

Agbakoba in a statement by a non-governmental organization, Hurrilaw, said EFCC as it is composed, is overworked, and cannot effectively investigate and prosecute corruption cases at the same time.

The powers to prosecute cases investigated by EFCC, the senior advocate suggested, should be vested in an independent and highly resourced prosecution, such as the national prosecution agency set up by the Attorney General of the Federation, to take over all high profile cases from police, ICPC, FIRS and EFCC.
