Abuja court jails magistrate for demanding N100, 000 bribe

A magistrate has been sentenced to a three year jail term for demanding bribe to influence judgement in a case brought before him.

The magistrate, Mohammed Balogun, was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission for demanding N100,000 from one Dr. Isidore Nnadi, and also collecting N50,000 from him.

In his judgement, Justice Ishaq Bello of an FCT High Court, noted that the magistrate pleaded for leniency, that he is a first offender and suffered psychological trauma, because his family deserted him during the trial.

Justice Bello, however said, the magistrate is expected to dispense justice without favour and sentenced him to three years, with an option of N500, 000 fine.
