Nigerian National Communication Commission (NCC) says a total of 47.8 million National Identity Number (NIN) have so far been collected by mobile telephone operators
NCC director of public affairs, Doctor Ikechukwu Adinde, made this known in a statement on Tuesday
He is optimistic that with an average of three to four sim card per subscriber, many of the sim cards will be linked with the NIN before the expiration of the February deadline
The commission had given January 19 for subscribers who have NIN to link them with their telephones sim cards, while those without NIN are given up to February 9 to do so
Federal government initially fixed December 30 deadline for the linking of sim cards of their phones to the national identity number, or telephone service providers will disconnect their lines It later extended the deadline by three weeks for those who have National Identity Number and February 9 for those without the number to obtain it and link them to their sim cards
