An estimated 20 million pupils in Public Primary Schools are to be fed daily in the Nigeria home grown school feeding programme.
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo announced this at the launch of the national home grown school feeding strategic plan, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the pupils would receive a meal daily under the programme.
Osinbajo said the programme when it takes off would have multiplier effects on the local economies by creating new jobs, increasing school enrolment, discouraging drop out from schools and improving the nutrition and health of the school pupils.
Speaking at the event, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State which is already implementing the free meal programme, said 13 states have been selected to serve as a pilot for the school feeding programme.
The free meal programme is one of the components of the social intervention scheme which 500 Billion Naira was voted for in the 2016 budget.
