The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said it has referred 80 motorists to mental health facilities for various traffic offences, as it commenced pilot exercise for new road safety enforcement policy.
On Saturday July 1, Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, deployed a team of road traffic marshals to major roads around Abuja, in a new operation codenamed ‘Cobra Squad.’
Spokesman of the Corp, Bisi Kazeem, speaking to newsmen, said that the offenders were arrested between Saturday and Sunday after commencing the new policy which kicked off on July 1.
He said the 80 motorists were arrested for 86 offences ranging from driving without seatbelts, making phone calls while driving.
Breaking down the operation since the enforcement began, Kazeem said 19 people were arrested on the first day for 22 offences while, 61 offenders were arrested for 64 violations of other traffic offences on Sunday.
