188,558 Kogi’s voters ask INEC to recall Dino Melaye from Senate

INEC to begin Melaye's recall process July 3

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received the signature of 188,558 registered voters in Kogi West senatorial district of Kogi state, seeking the recall of Senator Dino Melaye from the Senate.

The signature represents 52.3 per cent of 360 thousand and 98 registered voters in the senatorial district.

The collated signatures were conveyed to INEC headquarters in Abuja in six bags.

Leader of the petitioners, Corneilus Okowo told newsmen that the signatures were collated from registered voters in Ijumu, Kabba,/Bunu, Mopamori, Lokoja, Yagba West, Yagba East and Kogi local government areas.

He said, “We want Senator Melaye back because of poor representation, he is also not accessible to us, he is unreadable and has no constituency projects.

“Apart from the fact that h has never called any town hall meeting, there has been a major gap between the senator and the people he claims to represent.”

The demand for Melaye’s recall, according to him is because of misrepresenting and lack of interaction with the constituency.

Senator Melaye, however, had alleged that the collation of the signature is being sponsored by Governor Yahaya Bello.

Olowo refuted the allegation, saying, “We don’t need to lobby or allow anyone to lobby us. The governor and the senator are not from the same senatorial district.

“We believe that the Senate ought to be a place for people who can be trusted. We have stomach his excesses for more than two years now. We can’t continue anymore.

“We were the one that mobilised the voters and we did this for some days. Melaye was a pillar among those who installed the governor and was also the one who nominated the present secretary to the state government.”
