Seven people have died, and 136 missing in a boat which capsized and broken into two in a ghastly accident in River Niger in Kebbi state.
Seven people rescued by emergency workers have been rushed to hospitals.
The boat conveying 150 passengers from Malali market in the Borgu local government area capsized after hitting a stump in the area.
The sole administrator of Ngasaki local government, Garba Hassan says death toll may rise as local fishermen and officials of the Federal Inland Waterways continue search for more survivors in the river.
The Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency in-charge of Sokoto State, Kebbi and Zamfara states, Sulaiman Muhammad, said, “As soon as we had got the hint of the mishap, we put a call to the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority to help rescue the missing passengers.”
“All the people on board were missing, but as search and rescue operations intensified, 14 people were discovered; seven died and seven have been taken to Ngaski Hospital,” he said.
