Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said the number of political associations seeking registration as political parties for 2019 polls, has hit 136.
INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who made this known in Abuja, at the regular consultative meeting with political parties, said they are expected to swell the number of existing parties, which he put at 68.
According to him, 62 of the associations had met the requirement for registration as parties, while the applications of 74 had been rejected.
He explained that out of the 62 that met the requirements, nine of them had undergone verification, while 16 are still undergoing verification.
Due to the envisaged increased in the number of parties, the INEC chairman explained that the ballot papers will have to be redesigned to accommodate new parties during the 2019 polls.
