13 parents docked in court for early marriage of school girls in Niger

Thirteen parents who withdrew their children from schools and forced them into early marriage in Niger State, have been charged to court.

The State Education Commissioner, Hajiya Fatimo Madugu, who made this known at a news conference in Minna, said that forcing girls of school age into marriage, is now a punishable offence in the state.

She explained that seven of the school girls forced into marriage who wanted to continue their education are now being sponsored by the state government.

The eight other, according to the commissioner, are learning skills of their choice.
