Suspected smugglers have attacked the convoy of the comptroller, Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Sani Madugu, at the Ifo axis of the state.
One of the vehicles in the comptroller’s convoy was badly damaged during the attack, which took place near Ijako, on the Abeokuta/Lagos expressway.
Madugu, who made this known to newsmen at the Idiroko border post of the command, said he was stucked in the traffic jam in the area, when the attack took place on Tuesday night.
The comptroller explained that he had to call for reinforcement from the command headquarters in Abeokuta, and the police in the area, who repelled the attack.
“We refused to be provoked. We do not fire gun to avoid calamity, particularly because of innocent motorists and passersby. We had to call for reinforcement before we could leave the scene,” Madugu said.
He said although none of the officers in the entourage was injured, investigations are ongoing to arrest those behind the attack.
“The attacks would not discourage us. We shall not be intimidated. Attacking us shows that we are working and we are mounting pressure on them. We are always one step ahead of smugglers,” he further stated.
