Reps recommend upward review of minimum wage

House of Representatives

House of Representatives has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the labour and employment ministry, to initiate the process for the negotiation of a new national minimum wage for the Nigerian workers.

The House passed the resolution, following a motion by Peter Akpatason, who said the timely constitution of the negotiating team, will prevent the threatened nationwide strike.

Akpatason told the House that, the organized labour had already sent names of its negotiators to the federal government, but has not received any notice on when the negotiating committee will be set up.

The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, mandated the employment, Labour and productivity committee, to ensure the implementation of the resolution.

Nigeria Labour Congress had warned the Presidency that workers are becoming restive over the delay by the presidency in constituting the committee, which will negotiate a new wage.
