Primary, junior secondary schools to teach history as from 2018/2019

Strike: Ogun Teachers face sanction over 2016 Teachers Day

History is to be reintroduced as a subject, in primary and junior senior secondary schools nationwide, as from the 2018/2019 academic session.

Nigeria Education Research and Development Council, which made this known, said it will be taught from primary one to junior secondary school three, as a stand-alone curriculum.

The council’s executive secretary, Ismail Jinadu, explained that a sample of the new curriculum for history, will be sent to the state ministries of education, to enable them plan ahead of the implementation, and to train teachers.

“All states are expected to be sensitised and teachers trained on how to use the curriculum before the implementation can begin.

“We need to give the states ample time to put their house in order before we start implementing the curriculum,” he said.

The National Council on Education approved the re-introduction of the subject at its meeting last July in Abuja.
