Nine persons, including a police officer, have been killed in clashes between police and members of the Shi’ite Muslim Sect on the outskirt of Kano metropolis in Kano State.
The State Police Commissioner, Rabiu Yusuf, who released the casualty figure, said eight police officers and several of the sect’s members were also injured in the clashes around Tamburawa on the outskirt of the city.
He added that 10 of the sect’s members were also arrested.
Witnesses say the clash began when police attempted to stop the procession of the sect members around Tamburawa on the outskirt of the city.
Police claimed the sect members attacked them with weapons, including Matchete, bow and arrow and seized a rifle from a policeman, which was later recovered.
But the sect alleged the police opened fire on them.
The violent clashes led to the blocking of Kano-Zaria highway and the deployment of mobile policemen to contain the spread of the violence into the city.
