Pest threatens South-West cassava farms

A new pest disease is ravaging maize plantation in the south west region.

Institute of agricultural research and training, moor plantation in Ibadan, said several hectares of maize plantation in the region, have been ravaged by the pest.

 A soil scientist in the institute, Professor Lateef Taiwo, said the pest which he identified as army worms, eats the stem of the crop and the leaves, and could wreak havoc, if they were allowed to multiply.

The institute said it is putting machinery in motion, to control the spread of the disease to avoid acute shortage of maize.
