No knowledge of IPOB’s presence in our country, says French embassy

Possession of Biafra material now a criminal offence, Police warn

France has denied an allegation by the Nigeria’s government that it is hosting the financial base of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), whose leaders have gone into hiding.

The French Embassy in Abuja, in a statement by its political counsellor, Claude Abily, said it is shocked by the allegation levelled by the Information and Culture Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

The minister, at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said France is the financial headquarters of IPOB, and efforts will be made to block the access of the organization to its sources of funding.

But France through its embassy said it is not aware of a particular presence of IPOB within its territory, and that the Presidency has not got in touch with it on the issue.

French Embassy assured that, it is ready to investigate any information to back up the allegation, that France is hosting IPOB’S financial base.

“The embassy of France was surprised by the statement made yesterday by the minister of information and culture indicating that the financial headquarters of IPOB is in France,” read the statement.

“We don’t have any knowledge of a particular presence of IPOB in France and the Nigerian authorities never got in touch with the embassy on this point.

“We stand ready to examine any information which could support this statement. Furthermore, we would like to reiterate that France actively cooperates with Nigeria in the field of security and that we strongly support the unity of the country.”
