NEC Committee Wants Special Court To Try Oil Thieves

A special committee set up by the National Economic Council has called for a special court to handle cases of suspected crude and petroleum products thieves.

The commitee made the call in a report submitted to a meeting of the council presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, with all the State Governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Budget and National Planning Minister in attendance.

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, John Jonah, who briefed the state house correspondents after the meeting, said the committee also recommended the deployment of appropriate technology in surveillance, combat vehicles and boats to protect the oil installations.

The committee, he added recommended consultations with traditional rulers to sensitize their subjects on the criminal and environmental effects of spilling crude oil in the environment.
