NBA faults delay in passage of alternative dispute resolution bill

NBA faults agitations on break up of Nigeria

The Abeokuta branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has expressed concern over the delay by the Ogun State House of Assembly in the passage of the state administration of criminal justice system and arbitration, alternative dispute resolution bills.

The two bills sent to the assembly by Governor Ibikunle Amosun since March this year for consideration, are still at the first reading stage.

But the NBA branch chairman, Ibraheem Atanda speaking with Rockcity FM in Abeokuta, said the delay in the passage of the state administration of criminal justice bill is affecting the application of several provisions of the country’s criminal acts in the state.

He explained that the bill which addresses some of the shortcomings in the state criminal proceedings, aims at fast-tracking the dispensation of justice and decongesting of prisons across the state.

On the arbitration, alternative dispute resolution bill seeking settlement of civil matters outside the court, the Abeokuta NBA chairman asks the state Assembly to ensure speedy passage of the bill.

Atanda who also called for passage of other pending bills  before the state Assembly, said passing the bill  will give legal backing to  the alternative dispute resolution centre inside the Abeokuta Magistrate Court Complex
