17 people have been killed and 11 others injured in fresh attacks by suicide bombers in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
The multiple attacks took place at Alakorfa community, near Dalori, about two kilometres to Maiduguri on Sunday night as Muslim faithfuls were observing prayers.
Spokesman of the state police command, Victor Isiku, who confirmed the attack and casualty figure, said the first attack launched by two female bombers attempting to infiltrate an internally displaced camp, left seven people dead.
“The first suicide bomber detonated the IED near a mosque, killing seven persons. The second detonated in a house killing five persons. While two other suicide bombers detonated within the same vicinity, killing themselves. A total of 17 persons, including the five suicide bombers, died, while 11 persons sustained injuries and were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH),” his statement said.
Minutes later, another set of female suicide bombers detonated explosives strapped to their bodies in Dalori Kofa village killing five people.
Two suicide bombers later died in the third attack.
