The state governors have declared their support for the proposed state police force.
Their endorsement comes days after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, backing the proposal, said the centralized police system controlled from Abuja, is no longer effective for policing the country.
Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Yari, announced the support of the governors for the state police force at the National Security Summit, organized by the Senate.
Governor Yari said the proposed state police force will assist in tackling the growing security threats nationwide.
He said that, “Today we have reiterated the position of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
“And the position of the security summit we held in August, that there is a need for the state police; we can say it is the only answer.”
Under the proposal, the state police force will operate side-by-side with the federal government controlled Nigeria Police Force. Please subscribe to our newsletter
