Over 1,000 convicts on death row in Nigerian prisons

There are more than 1,000 condemned criminals on the death row in Nigeria’s prison.

The United Kingdom high commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, who made this known in a statement to mark this year’s world day against the death penalty, said the more than 1,000 condemned criminals on death row was Africa’s highest.

Asking Nigeria to abolish the death penalty, the diplomat said 171 persons were sentenced to death in Nigeria last year.

The ambassador, who noted that no death sentence has been executed since 2013 when four persons were executed, asked Nigeria to join 35 other African Nations, who had abolished death penalty.
